If you are connected to the Internet, you have a security problem. I see people all the time who are exposing themselves to needless risk. If you read nothing else on this site, please read this page to see if any of the following risks apply to you.
Fast Internet Connections
When I first got my cable modem, I remember being shocked to find that I could see
files on my neighbors' computers. Not much has changed since then. Your cable
or DSL modem does nothing to prevent outside intruders from seeing and attacking
your computer. Not only is your personal data at risk from vandals and
thieves, but your computer can be turned into a
"zombie"
used to attack other systems. The solution is adding a
firewall.
A firewall is to your computer what door locks and window blinds are to your house.
No networked computer should be without a firewall. There are
good, free firewall programs that protect individual computers as well as hardware
firewalls for safeguarding an entire network. If you don't want to set a
firewall up yourself, let me do it for you.
Viruses
If you do not have current anti-virus software on your machine, you will
get a virus. If you are lucky, it will only be annoying. If you are
not lucky, it will destroy your data. How lucky do you feel?
Wireless Networks
Wireless networking has become fast and easy to set up. Unfortunately most people do not secure their wireless networks.
Failing to secure your wireless network is like going on vacation and leaving your garage door open.
I view other peoples' networks all the time with my wireless laptop. There
are even people who drive around in cars searching for unsecured wireless
networks. This practice is called "wardriving". Wireless
networks should use the most secure encryption possible. I can teach you
how to protect yourself.
Business Network Security
Small businesses are usually not as careful as they should be about security.
If you use computers in your business, remember that you can be held liable for
exposing your customer or employee data. I can help you balance security
with usability.
